Genetic traits
- Bengals can have a genetic condition called progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), which causes retinal deterioration and eventually blindness.
- The "glitter" trait in Bengals is caused by reduced expression of the Fgfr2 gene.
Selective breeding
- Selective breeding of Bengals for desired traits has introduced a variety of new coat colors and patterns.
- Some of the most striking examples of selection in the breed are for traits that were already present, but very rare, in domestic cats.
